St. Naum Monastery on Lake Ohrid ~ 1930–40
In this photograph by the Manaki Brothers, a view of the Monastery of St. Naum is shown, including the tower that existed at that time.
The tower in the monastery complex of St. Naum was built in the period from 1925 to 1929, at a time when Macedonia was part of the then Kingdom of Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes. The conceptual creator and designer of the tower was the renowned Serbian architect Momir Korunović (1883–1969).
The tower was 42 meters high and was located about ten meters northwest of the central church; it was constructed of reinforced concrete, directly on the rock above the lake.
It was demolished in 1956, at a time when Macedonia was part of the then Federal People’s Republic of Yugoslavia, with the explanation that “the tower does not fit into the architectural composition of the church.”
