Cave Church of St. Catherine, Monastery of St. Erasmus, Ohrid

Hidden in the rocky landscape northwest of the Monastery of St. Erasmus, just 200 metres from the monastery complex, is the Cave Church of St. Catherine — a small and secluded sanctuary reached by a narrow, steep concrete path.

The climb is part of the experience. As you leave the monastery behind and follow the path into the rocks, the landscape gradually gives way to a place of silence and contemplation. Built within a natural cave, the church forms part of the spiritual world of the St. Erasmus monastery and preserves the ancient tradition of transforming secluded spaces in nature into places of prayer.

A Church Inside the Mountain

Cave churches are among the most distinctive expressions of Macedonia's religious and cultural heritage. Rather than constructing a church entirely from the ground up, medieval monks adapted natural cavities in the rock — enlarging them, shaping their interiors, adding masonry where necessary and transforming the caves into sacred spaces.

Many such caves also served as hermitages, offering monks a place to withdraw from everyday life and devote themselves to prayer and contemplation.

The tradition has deep roots in the region, reaching back to around the 9th century, while many surviving examples preserve medieval artistic traditions dating from the 13th and 14th centuries. Together, these sanctuaries form a remarkable connection between Macedonia's dramatic natural landscapes and its centuries-old spiritual heritage.

The Cave Church of St. Catherine belongs to this fascinating tradition. Its secluded position above the landscape offers visitors a glimpse into a form of Christian spirituality shaped not only by faith, but also by the mountains and rocks themselves.

In Honour of St. Catherine

The church is dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria, one of the most revered female saints of the Christian tradition.

According to tradition, Catherine was a young Christian virgin and martyr who lived in Alexandria in the early 4th century. Hagiographic accounts describe her as exceptionally learned and courageous, and tell of her conversion to Christianity and her steadfast refusal to renounce her faith.

She became one of the most celebrated Christian martyrs of the early Church and is venerated particularly in the Eastern Orthodox tradition.

Every year on 7 December, the Monastery of St. Erasmus and the Cave Church of St. Catherine become places of solemn celebration in honour of the saint. The feast brings together the spiritual traditions of the monastery and the cave sanctuary, continuing a tradition of devotion that has connected this secluded place with generations of worshippers.
