Manchevci Archaeological Site, Ohrid
At the Manchevci archaeological site in Ohrid, a remarkable discovery was made during construction works in 2009. Archaeologists uncovered an Early Christian basilica, which was later conserved and opened to the public in 2012.
The basilica is especially notable for its rich mosaic floors, preserved in unusually large numbers. These mosaics once decorated different parts of the church and reflect the artistic and spiritual life of the early Christian community in Ohrid.
The most important feature is a mosaic panel with a donor inscription, which mentions two names—Thomas and John. They are believed to have been the patrons or builders of the basilica.
Today, the Manchevci site offers a quiet but powerful glimpse into Ohrid’s early Christian past, where faith, art, and community were expressed through stone and mosaic.
