Plaoshnik and the Church of Saint Panteleimon, Ohrid, Macedonia
The archaeological complex of Plaoshnik, located in Ohrid, is one of the most important historical, cultural, and spiritual sites in Macedonia.
Set between Samuel’s Fortress and the Church of St. John at Kaneo, and overlooking the crystal waters of Lake Ohrid, this location offers a rare blend of natural beauty and deep historical significance.
Plaoshnik bears witness to an uninterrupted continuity of life from the Late Bronze Age to the present day. It was here that the earliest settlement on the Ohrid hill was established. In antiquity, when the city was known as Lychnidos, this area served as a major religious center, home to important temples, including one dedicated to the god Dionysus.
During Late Antiquity and the early Christian period, between the 4th and 6th centuries, Lychnidos became an episcopal center of the Roman province of New Epirus. On Plaoshnik, monumental early Christian basilicas were built over the foundations of pagan sanctuaries, richly decorated with mosaics whose remains can still be seen today.
At the end of the 9th century, this sacred place was marked by the arrival of Saint Clement of Ohrid, the first Slavic bishop. He restored an older church and dedicated it to Saint Panteleimon. Here, he founded the Ohrid Literary School and the first Slavic university, from which Slavic literacy, culture, and art spread across the region. Saint Clement also built his own tomb inside the church, where he was buried in the year 916.
Over the centuries, the Church of Saint Panteleimon was repeatedly restored and decorated with frescoes. At the end of the 15th century, during the Ottoman period, it was destroyed, and a mosque commissioned by Sultan Mehmed was built on the same site. This structure was later abandoned and gradually fell into ruin.
Modern archaeological excavations began in 1942 and 1943, leading to the discovery of the foundations of Saint Clement’s church and the saint’s tomb. Further research and conservation work culminated in the complete reconstruction of the Church of Saint Panteleimon between 1999 and 2002, marking the jubilee “Two Thousand Years of Christianity in Ohrid and Macedonia.”
The church you see today stands on its original 9th-century foundations, rebuilt using authentic materials and traditional construction techniques. Inside, visitors can admire preserved fresco paintings from the 11th to the 14th century, glass-covered remains of earlier floor layers, a marble floor, the iconostasis, and the tomb of Saint Clement.
Between 2007 and 2009, new systematic archaeological research was carried out, marking the beginning of the restoration of the wider complex known as the “University of Saint Clement.”
Today, Plaoshnik is a place where history, spirituality, and nature come together into a single, unforgettable experience — an essential stop for every visitor to Ohrid.
