Memorial House of Hristo Uzunov, Ohrid

Built in the mid-19th century, this house was most likely constructed by Hristo Uzunov or Dimitar Uzunov, both well-known figures of the Macedonian National Revival in Ohrid. It was here that Hristo Uzunov was born and later lived.

Hristo Uzunov was born on October 22, 1878, and died on April 24, 1905. He was a Macedonian revolutionary, teacher, military leader, and regional commander of the armed units of the Macedonian Revolutionary Organization in the Ohrid Revolutionary District.

After the deaths of the Uzunov brothers—Andon in 1903 and Hristo in 1905—their mother Anastasia moved to Kyustendil, Bulgaria, to live with her only surviving son, Angele Uzunov. The house then remained empty for a period of time.

In 1960, the house was transferred to the ownership of the National Museum of Ohrid. After several renovations, it was officially declared a cultural monument in 1996, recognized for its architectural and historical value.

Around that time, the permanent exhibition “The National Liberation Movement in Ohrid and the Ohrid Region” was opened to visitors. It presents documents and objects related to the Ilinden period and the broader national liberation struggle in this area. A memorial room dedicated to Hristo Uzunov was also reconstructed.

In addition to its permanent historical display, the Memorial House regularly hosts temporary exhibitions focused on history, art history, and conservation, as well as scholarly meetings and symposia.

This quiet house preserves the memory of a man whose life and ideals were closely tied to Ohrid’s struggle for freedom and identity.
